In the midst of the Cold War, two superpower arms negotiators, a Russian and an American, meet informally in a pleasant woods on the outskirts of Geneva after long, frustrating hours at the bargaining table. As the seasons change and their negotiations drag on, the pair continue their informal meetings, through which they develop a deepening understanding of each other as well as express the profound frustrations they increasingly feel. Although set decades in the past, Lee Blessing’s examination of Russian-American relations is presciently relevant, and his characters are a palpable reminder of the human need for connection, particularly when agreement seems unattainable.
