Carrie Watts, an aging widow, is living unhappily under the watchful eye of her overprotective son and bossy daughter-in-law. She takes matters into her own hands and runs away, sure that she can regain her peace of mind, if only she can return home to the small town where she grew up. She is befriended by a young girl who listens to her reminisce, and a kindly sheriff who allows her to complete the final stage of her long journey to Bountiful. Her trip reaches a bittersweet end, but it proves to be a journey of the heart worth taking, when at last she rediscovers the strength and dignity that will give her the courage to survive.
