It’s 1939 and we find a group of catty, competitive friends destroying reputations at social gatherings. The dialogue sparkles, as Crystal Allen, the “terrible man-trap,” steals poor Mary’s husband from under her nose! How these “friends” deal with their daughters, their marriages, and their divorces makes a bold statement for its time.
When she was born, in 1903, there was not significant feminist movement, no women politicians…. So she created her own women’s Consciousness Raising Group: it included a beauty, a magazine editor, a wit, a raconteur, a dramatist, a correspondent, a politician, a religious thinker, a nuclear arms expert, a presidential advisor, a wife, a mother, a painter, an art collector, and a scuba diver. And they were all named Clare.
